A Dutiful Son and Brother

Remembering our Junie...

William Gilbert Jenkins, Jr., the son of the late Reverend William Rivers Jenkins and Rosalie Deas Jenkins was born June 29, 1949 in Charleston, South Carolina. Willie Jr or "Junie" as they affectionately call him is the second born, and first born son, of four children. His siblings Florabelle (deceased), Samuel and Rose Marie were brought up to work hard, respect and care for one another.  At a young age William was exposed to the arts and the sea, two passions that would carry him on many adventures throughout his life. His father a long shoreman for over 60+ years and his mother, a registered nurse and a lover of the arts, influenced his life in ways that would never be replaced. Learning to play piano and drums, he went on to graduate from Burke High School in 1967 which led him to the Tuskegee University (formerly Tuskegee Institute) on a band scholarship the fall of that year. During his undergraduate tenure, William was a snare drummer for the Tuskegee University's esteemed Crimson Piper Marching Band serving as the Percussion's Section Leader.

Always a man of the sea, it was no surprise upon graduation from Tuskegee with a Bachelors of Science degree in Electrical Engineering William went on to work as a Naval Marine Engineer. He retired in 2015 and immediately began the full time care of his mother, now 105 years young. He has remained dedicated to his family, taking care of his family home, his siblings and his mother until his passing.

A Dedicated Omega Man

Joining the Sons of Blood and Thunder...

Your Father and my Life-long homeboy, started as young boys playing in Burke HS Concert and Marching Bands.  From the very beginning, he always displayed charisma, enthusiasm and leadership for many to emulate. Your Father and Theron Snype convinced me to attend Tuskegee and that proved to be a great decision in my life. At Tuskegee, all of the Charleston Brothers hung together and "Mini-Brute" lead with big smiles and laughter.  We were section leaders in the band. I remember one night it was raining like crazy on campus and he said, “homeboy, I am going to see Drey at the dorm and the rain will not stop me from going.  I said, ok, let’s roll.  We prodded through the rain and mud for him to see his lady. He enjoyed being with her and you would see them strolling through the campus or up by the Rock. On band trips, concert or marching, Mini-Brute was one of the leaders and kept us together.

In 1969 we began our journey to Omega land crossing the burning sands in the fall that year with your Mini-brute as the Ace on our line, "The Notorious 16" . As part of the Gold Dust Twins with Smith Atwater, Mini-Brute lead the line with classy stepping and singing. We wore our frat hat and shirt everyday commemorating our journey into Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated through Lambda Epsilon Chapter. As Sons of Blood and Thunder we always strive to lead by example through personifying the four cardinal principles: manhood, scholarship, perseverance and uplift. As members of the band the Omega Brothers displayed Leadership being named band officers in 4 of the 6 sections. During our time as brothers in friendship we had times we would never forget like our legendary Christmas Greyhound bus trips to Charleston. Once we arrived home for Christmas break, we always hung out attending various parties and would always end the night at Waffle House.  Sometimes we paid, sometimes we didn’t. Crazy stuff young energetic brothers got into at the time. I can write an entire book about our exploits, but what resonates the most about Mini-Brute is his infectious personality and smile that will always be his DASH for us to remember. Like you and your entire family - WE MISS MINI-BRUTE.

Friendship is the Essential to the Soul,

Anthony Aiken

A Devoted Husband

Remembering our love story...

In the Spring of 1969 of my sophomore year, I joined the Tuskegee University (formally Tuskegee Institute) Concert Band at the persuasion of a college classmate.  Two weeks later I finally got up the nerves to walk into the band cottage as a flutist.  At the end of my very first day at practice, a band member approached me as I was packing to leave and said, “Hold Up, Wait for Me Outside While I Put  My Drum Away“.  A few minutes later, this band member walked out and said, “What’s Happening?  My Name is Gilbert Jenkins, but they call me Mini-Brute”, and so our college romance began….

Throughout the remaining college years, we spent exciting times together, i.e. dorm visits, Que parties, walking across campus, or just sitting on steps in front of the Que Rock chatting with everyone who came by.  However, the best college times were watching him perform. Whether it was in the TI marching band (especially one homecoming day when he performed the drum solo segment of Shaft by Isaac Hayes) or when Mini-Brute Que Dawg #1 marched with his fraternity brothers.  Wow! Wow! Wow! How He Could March! In my eyes he wasn’t Dawg #1 because of his height, it was because he could sing and march with a personality and a heart bigger than life itself. On Valentine’s Day, 1972 Gilbert surprised me with a “First Promise” ring and so our journey began and on September 1, 1974, we vowed our love in holy matrimony and began our life together as one in Maryland. We have been blessed with two beautiful children with the characteristics we see in ourselves every day.

Gilbert and I made sure that our children were well rounded individuals.  We raised them to be honest, respective, independent, smart, self-motivated, and hardworking individuals. When it came to our children there was no task too small or large for him to overcome for them. His camera became his canvas.  He captured their activities through his camera regardless of the event from birth, pre-school, kindergarten, elementary, high school, college – yes college. We would drive miles on the weekends to see our son play football, pledge and march on the yard, or our daughter perform on the cheer leading team and eventually becoming a college cheerleaders coach. We even made sure to support all of their major events as adults. We gave everything for our children. They always came first.

Outside of the home, he captured the hearts of everyone one he met.  He always smiled and made them feel important during their conversations. He was a girls basketball coach for our daughter, taught our son how to catch a football, fostered our kids love for animals raising pets of all kinds from fish, birds, rabbits (including competing) to our loving dogs. He took our kids to the Montgomery County Fair every year teaching them about about agriculture, and prize winning agriculture at that for 4 years in a row! Gilbert, my love, is the most talented and smartest man I know.  He was great at anything he put his mind to.  If he didn’t know how about something he went out of his way to find out.

He was a man of many talents and so many passions. He was a musicians playing snare drum, piano, guitar, steel drum.  He even created a famous drum cadence during his high school/college days that was used in the movie “Drum Line”. It made him smile every time he heard it. He loved his cars especially his 1974 corvette, a prize winner for best show. He loved his collections of watches, coins, stamps, vinyl records, fishing rods, etc. He was a lover of many things and everything he did, he did it with passion.

To you my love, as our hearts have intertwined, they will forever beat as one.  You’ve continued to do what you do best; go forward to prepare a place for us.  I’d like to think of this time away as just another very long trip just as you’ve taken so many times before. As we embark on this new journey, I’m reminded of the love we’ve shared, and the countless memories we have made together. You are my Sweetheart! My Love! My Heart! My Soul! and Always and Forever More, The Love of My Life!! My Heart Beats for the Two of Us!  Gilbert, I LOVE YOU!!

A Loving Father

My father, my first love...

Dad there are no perfect words to express what you mean to me but I was Blessed to have one of the best dads a daughter could have. We created so many memories that I will cherish for the rest of my life. From long trips to long conversations, life decisions big and small, you were my number one fan, best support system, always the life of the party and my best friend in the whole wide world. You taught me so much about life.  You taught me how to stand on my own two feet. And no matter what I did you stood by me for every decision I made. We did a lot together and I know you will be with me forever always. We are two peas in a pod.

 Love you now and forever,

Your Daughter Akia

A father and a brother..

Throughout my entire life, I have never longed for anything. You
always taught me the importance of fighting for what I believe in and
to approach life with passion and enthusiasm.  As I reminisce, I look
at how blessed I was to have you as my dad. From building friendships
to playing sports, you were always there to teach and support me.
There was never a time where I would look back and I would not see you
there. You were always present in my life through all of my life's
moments and I will forever be grateful to you for that. You were more
to me than just my father, you were also my brother. I want to thank
the Lord for allowing me to share you with the world and I am blessed
to be your son. In your words to me: "Hold what you got and grab what
you can"; know that I always will. I love you and miss you dearly and
I am thankful that you were my dad!

Forever the Son of Mini-Brute,

Rashad
